Net 138 History and Operation

NET 138 11/98

Net 138 was formed in 1986 as one of the original Nets in Region 17 and geographically encompassed most of Washington State. As Fidonet grew with more Nodes in the metropolitan areas, then in less populated areas, new Nets were formed. This progression continued and caused Net 138 to become geographically fragmented. By 1989 Net 138 included only the Tacoma, Olympia, Bremerton, Wenatchee and Spokane areas. Later that year, the Wenatchee and Spokane areas formed their own Nets as did the Olympia and Bremerton areas in 1990-92. In 1998, the Olympia area Nodes dwindled to 2 and again became a part of Net 138.

Echomail history:

Until 1990, the Regional Echomail Coordinator was a local (Net 138) Node and provided direct connections to Net 138 Nodes during the day while reserving the low-cost, night time hours for connections to out-of town Nodes and Nets. Echomail was being transported on POTS lines at 2400 bps until the late '80s when Telebit and HST 9600 bps modems were used.

In 1990 the first NEC138 was appointed. That system picked up echomail from the REC and delivered it to the Net 138 nodes. Also, in 1990, 90+% of Net 138 participated in a voluntary drive to purchase a USR HST 9600 bps modem to bring down echomail costs and time. This modem, through timely replacement and upgrades, is still in use in the Net.

In 1993 (?) an echomail machine was constructed from donated parts and named "Ginger". Like the modem, it's been through updates and upgrades through the years and is still in use moving echomail.

There have been a variety of echomail sources and CRPs in Net 138 including the above mentioned "Ginger", land line (POTS), two private Planet Connect satellite dishes, various ftp connections including a Regional Hub (RHUB). As many as four echomail sources have existed at the same time within Net 138. Costs, too, have varied from free to voluntary contributions & mandatory contributions. Echomail is, again, available to Net 138 Nodes at no cost.

Many volunteers have added to the available services in Net 138 through the years such as filbone connections, inbound/outbound Netmail routing, BBS lists creation, echomail hubing.
